Holiday Pet Safety Tips

As the Christmas and New Year’s approaches, this becomes a busy time in many people’s lives. Between buying presents, planning parties, and booking flights it can become overwhelming to keep track of everything going on. One major part of your life you can’t neglect is your loving pet.

As you prepare for this season be sure to take keep your pet safe with these helpful tips:

Watch for Allergies

Many holiday plants, including holly, mistletoe, and in some cases poinsettias, are toxic to dogs and cats if ingested. If you do have these plants in your home, make sure they are located where your dog or cat could never get ahold of them. However, if you have a cat that can reach great heights, (and many can) consider purchasing fake plants instead.

Be Careful of Overstimulation

If you are going to have a lot of people coming into your home, be sure that your pet will be taken care of during this time. For many cats and dogs, and influx of new people can overexcite them and possibly create anxiety. If you think your pet may be anxious around many different people, be sure to provide a safe space for them to stay during the festivities. Put them in a room where they won’t be exposed to the hustle and bustle of your house guests. Be sure to provide their favorite toys, a soft bed/ blanket, and a few treats. Check on them periodically to ensure they are doing okay.

No Table Scraps

Your pet may be a beggar, and it is hard to resist puppy dog eyes, but it is best to refrain from feeding your dog your holiday table scraps. Many of the foods we eat are not suitable for their consumption and could result in an upset stomach. The last thing you want to do on Christmas is rush your puppy to the vet because you fed them too much pound cake!

With these simple tips, you can ensure your pets have a happy and safe holiday season. Be sure to check our blog for more pet tips and information.
