How to Protect Your Dog from the Sun

If you have a dog, chances are that they love spending time outside with you. Dogs, just like people, love to sit and lay in the sun because the warmth feels so good. While outside, their fur largely protects them from the sun’s rays, but it won’t always stop the sun from burning them completely. Here are a few tips to keep your dog safe from the sun.

Don’t Shave

If your dog has long hair, don’t shave them during the summer. The more hair they have, the more protected they are from the sun. It might seem like a good idea, considering most people opt for a shorter haircut to keep cool, but for dogs the longer the hair the better.

Use Sunscreen

Find a sunscreen that is specifically formulated for dogs and once you do, contact your vet to make sure it is OK to use on your dog. Unlike people, you don’t have to apply sunscreen across all exposed areas like a human would either. On your pup, only use sunscreen on areas where your dog is most exposed to the sun, like any thin patches or exposed belly areas.

Don’t Use Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is a common ingredient in sunscreen, but it can be toxic to dogs. Make sure to look at the labels on any sunscreens you’re considering for your dog and avoid products that include this as an ingredient.

Provide Protective Clothing

Sometimes, dogs don’t respond well to sunscreen and have reactions to it. If this is the case with your dog, a good alternative is protective clothing. When picking out apparel for your pup, look for lighter colors as these are better for keeping dogs – and people – cool.

Give Them Shade

If you’re going to be outside with your dog an extended period of time, don’t forget to spend some time in the shade every once and a while. This will keep them cool and give them a break from the sun’s UV rays.
